Goldbely.com: Jeni’s Ice Cream Sandwiches (from Columbus, OH)

5 Nov

As soon as I read about Goldbely.com, I knew I had found a site that I would love.  They aggregate (and curate) some of the best local foods from around the country and allow you to order them to be shipped fresh, right to your door.  You can order a steak from Peter Luger Steakhouse in Brooklyn, a deep dish pizza from Lou Malnati’s in Chicago, or ice cream sandwiches from Jeni’s of Columbus, Ohio fame.  They have a really good showing from some of NYC’s best with Katz’s Deli, Zabar’s, Barney Greengrass, Sarah Beth’s, Seredipity 3 (and their famous Frrrozen hot chocolate), some black and white cookies, and even our favorite corner butcher, Esposito’s.  And that’s just a sampling.

I held an “ice cream party” for my team at work to celebrate their good, hard work over the summer and ordered up those Jeni’s Macaroon ice cream sandwiches.  I got two packs of 8, which had 4 flavors:

Salty Caramel with Smoked Almonds

Chocolate Hazelnut

Orchid Vanilla Bean

Oatmeal Cream

We split each of them into quarters and dug in.

Each one was better than the last.  Though I think the salty caramel won out by a smidge for me.  The chocolate hazelnut was a very close second, however.  And they were all really great and a really fun treat for everyone.

They kept me very updated on when it would be delivered and it came incredibly fast.  I also don’t feel like they are ridiculously upcharged, and it all seemed worth it for the experience (and much cheaper than a plane ticket and a hotel!)

I also recommended Cranberry Island Kitchen to Goldbely (they have a recommendation option at the bottom of the page).  Cranberry Island Kitchen made the whoopie pies we had at our wedding, which were stupendous. Luckily, Goldbely liked them as much as we did and they are already up on the site!

And hey, if you do decide sign up, if you use my link you will get $20 off an order of $50 or more and I’ll get some credit to buy more treats… so you know… do yourself AND NYCNomNom a favor and use my referral link: http://curebit.com/x/ZKby7A  (and no… I wasn’t paid for this review… I just really really dig Goldbely!)

Welcome to the Neighborhood: MyDanoz

16 Aug

Our NY office is on 5th Avenue and 30th Street. (I never know what to call the neighborhood… since we’re ON 5th I guess just Midtown, but we’re also close to Flatiron).  Pretty much everyone says this about their neighborhood (and I say it about my apartment neighborhood, too), but there are very few places to get a good lunch around here.

I want something quick and flavorful. Typically I try to lean towards healthy.

Sure, there is a “make your own salad” place with a hot buffet bar (those things creep me out) and any number of other things… but that gets old after a while.  And how many variations can I make on a salad? Truly.

This morning I was walking on the other side of the street than I usually do and spotted a new place (on 5th Avenue between 29th and 30th Streets, East Side of the street). I had no idea if it was just new to me, or new to the neighborhood. According to their Twitter feed, MyDanoz Fine Foods opened July 5th. (And call me a grammar/spelling nerd, but their website needs some fine tuning. Though “Diary” instead of “Dairy” is kind of cute in an “awww… so close” kind of way.)

I was really impressed walking in. It just felt like somewhere I want to be.  Fresh bread on the shelves.

Delicious sounding sandwiches (lots of fig and fig jam on the menu!)

A grocery store with high-end, nice food.  A lovely looking dessert case. And an illy coffee bar. (I’m a big fan of illy coffee)

And in the back there is fresh produce, a sushi bar, and soon-to-be salad bar station.

Upstairs they have a nice place to eat lunch and a wine bar, which will be opening soon.

And even a roof terrace!

On my way through the cafe (store? shop?), a woman was making awesome looking crepes, and the woman next to her was offering samples. One bite and I was hooked.

I chose a smoked turkey, fresh tomato, gruyere, spinach, and basil crepe. And it was quite a hefty crepe!

Some crepes are really just a plain conduit for fillings, but this crepe was really flavorful on its own and the fillings were fresh and very, very good.  It was a very filling lunch, actually! (Which I never expect from a crepe)

As I was walking through and taking pictures, a man approached me who I assume is the owner.  His English was a bit tough to understand, but his pride in his business was clear and warm. He mentioned how excited he was to bring fresh, good food to the area and we lamented about how much it was needed.  He said that they are only part of the way there and new things will be coming soon, such as the wine bar and more deli stuffs.  I’m excited to have this place so close and looking forward to trying more!

Meatball Shop – Takeout

21 Feb

In honor of the newest location of The Meatball Shop opening in Chelsea (9th Ave and 22nd Street), I figured it time to blog about our quick takeout from the Greenwich Ave location.

We had just gotten out of a food event and somehow found ourselves still hungry and more than a little tipsy. When we realized that The Meatball Shop was right next door, we determined it was as good a time as any to finally try it. The wait was over an hour, but there is a takeout counter in the back. We had our Meatball Sandwiches in hand and were in a cab on our way home in less than 20 minutes. Not too shabby.

We got home and opened up our box of goodies. Mike got something resembling a meatball parm.

And I got one with a fried egg on top.

The verdict?

Ehhhhhhhh….

It was fine. Okay. Passable. But it didn’t change my life. I’m not sure if it was because it was takeout or because we got the sandwich versions (which kind of reminded me of a regular burger, especially since the roll was so soft).

I guess I just need to hit up the new Chelsea location and check it out before I make my final assessment.
