Welcome to the Neighborhood: MyDanoz

16 Aug

Our NY office is on 5th Avenue and 30th Street. (I never know what to call the neighborhood… since we’re ON 5th I guess just Midtown, but we’re also close to Flatiron).  Pretty much everyone says this about their neighborhood (and I say it about my apartment neighborhood, too), but there are very few places to get a good lunch around here.

I want something quick and flavorful. Typically I try to lean towards healthy.

Sure, there is a “make your own salad” place with a hot buffet bar (those things creep me out) and any number of other things… but that gets old after a while.  And how many variations can I make on a salad? Truly.

This morning I was walking on the other side of the street than I usually do and spotted a new place (on 5th Avenue between 29th and 30th Streets, East Side of the street). I had no idea if it was just new to me, or new to the neighborhood. According to their Twitter feed, MyDanoz Fine Foods opened July 5th. (And call me a grammar/spelling nerd, but their website needs some fine tuning. Though “Diary” instead of “Dairy” is kind of cute in an “awww… so close” kind of way.)

I was really impressed walking in. It just felt like somewhere I want to be.  Fresh bread on the shelves.

Delicious sounding sandwiches (lots of fig and fig jam on the menu!)

A grocery store with high-end, nice food.  A lovely looking dessert case. And an illy coffee bar. (I’m a big fan of illy coffee)

And in the back there is fresh produce, a sushi bar, and soon-to-be salad bar station.

Upstairs they have a nice place to eat lunch and a wine bar, which will be opening soon.

And even a roof terrace!

On my way through the cafe (store? shop?), a woman was making awesome looking crepes, and the woman next to her was offering samples. One bite and I was hooked.

I chose a smoked turkey, fresh tomato, gruyere, spinach, and basil crepe. And it was quite a hefty crepe!

Some crepes are really just a plain conduit for fillings, but this crepe was really flavorful on its own and the fillings were fresh and very, very good.  It was a very filling lunch, actually! (Which I never expect from a crepe)

As I was walking through and taking pictures, a man approached me who I assume is the owner.  His English was a bit tough to understand, but his pride in his business was clear and warm. He mentioned how excited he was to bring fresh, good food to the area and we lamented about how much it was needed.  He said that they are only part of the way there and new things will be coming soon, such as the wine bar and more deli stuffs.  I’m excited to have this place so close and looking forward to trying more!

L&W Oyster Co

1 Jan

I joined an old coworker for lunch right near my NYC office at a brand new place, L&W Oyster Co (on 5th Ave between 28th and 29th). I think it had been open for just a few weeks.

The menu was a bit different from what is posted online, so here was the lunch meeting from a couple weeks ago:

The restaurant is quirky, small, and fun.

DSCF2345

With magnetic poetry on the walls.

DSCF2347

And place mats explaining some of their favorite oysters (though not what is on the menu).

DSCF2346

My ex-coworker started with the clams.

And I got a selection of the three oysters on the menu and we shared some large shrimp cocktail. (All the fresh seafood was very good and very fresh)

DSCF2351

And we were delighted to be given a pack of their homemade goldfish crackers.

DSCF2353

They were mildly spicy and baked to a perfect crispy.

DSCF2355

Steve got The Popeye with steamed mussels, chorizo, spinach, white wine, and gigantic beans. I couldn’t try it due to the chorizo, but he really enjoyed his meal.

DSCF2356

I got the Clam on Clam action which came with a clamwich (fried clams, tarter sauce, and pickled shisito peppers, which I asked to not have due to the my allergy) and some chowdah (brooklyn clam chowder, brooklyn lager, corn nuts, and house cured pancetta).  Before my meal made it in front of me, our waiter realized that my clamwich still included the peppers, so back into the kitchen that went.  But I got to start on my chowdah and quinoa (which was tasty).  I really loved this chowdah.  Creamy without being too heavy, good clam flavor, and the corn nuts and pancetta in it were just perfect.

And when my clamwich (with salt & vinegar potato chips… YUM!) came out, I enjoyed that it was on a parker house roll roll.  It was a nice fluffy foil for the crunchy clam strips (though I wish they were more clamy in flavor).  The sandwich was good, but not as good as the chowdah.

DSCF2362

We also ordered some coffee (gotta love a French Press).

DSCF2363

And tried their sorbet of the day, which I can’t remember the exact flavor, but I remember it being some sort of citrus, and it was especially delicious. Great flavor and texture.  Really great end to the meal.

I was impressed by our entire lunch here and think it’s a great lunch spot.  Nothing was among the best of that dish I have ever had, but everything was solidly tasty and I like what they’ve got going on.

Brooklyn Diner- “The Finer Diner”

7 Aug

We take clients out to all sorts of fancy restaurants, so when we had one request a trip to Brooklyn Diner, we quizzically agreed. We can go any place in Manhattan and you want to go to a diner? A diner called Brooklyn Diner? Which is in Time Square? And has the tagline “The Finer Diner?”

Well… ok…

Brooklyn Diner is the classic Times Square establishment with such a bright neon sign that it blends right in to the rest of the block. When we entered, I realize it’s part of a family of restaurants including Redeye Grill, Tratoria Dell’Arte, and Bond 45, all of which are in the general vicinity of midtown.  Turns out, I’ve been to all of their restaurants except Brooklyn Diner, and was actually quite fond of the restaurant family.  The food at each was always reliably good, if not above par for Times Square.  All are more than any normal person would ever want to spend, but hell, it’s Times Square, so good quality food seemed fair at their price.

Back to “The Finer Diner.”

After a bit of teasing about this pick, we found out that our client’s heard from some of their coworkers that this place was very good, and happened to have a really good lobster roll.  Well ok!

I actually wound up getting grilled cheese with split pea soup. It was a very chilly day and this hit the spot.  The bread was perfectly crisp, the cheese full of flavor and melty without being a mess, and the soup had great flavor.

DSCF8126

I shouldn’t have been so skeptical!

They put hot dogs in it too, which was a fun (and delicious) twist on ham.

DSCF8127

Everyone else went right for the lobster roll, which they all said was very good.  Even their fries and onion straws were especially crisp and tasty.

I was pleasantly surprised by Brooklyn Diner.  I guess my expectations were quite low (I can be so judgmental sometimes!), but I would recommend this place to anyone in the area looking for a casual and relaxing lunch before a Broadway show.
