Valenca in Elizabeth, NJ

7 Nov

Having a destination wedding meant a few of our favorite people couldn’t make it.  It was a bummer that we couldn’t celebrate with them, but a few of them offered to take us out to dinner to celebrate afterwards.  My cousins were one of those lovely, generous couples.

They told us that they had a place that they thought would be NomNom approved.  So off to Elizabeth, NJ we went to try Portuguese Restaurant, Valenca.

The restaurant wound up being huge inside with multiple rooms (I believe they bought up a few surrounding locations over the years).

We got a pitcher of their sangria and it seemed quite appropriate that the pitcher had a lobster on it (since we had a lobster heavy Maine wedding).

We started with a big bowl of salad for the table. It was fresh and dressed really well.  Simple and good.

We saw a few flaming plates going by, so we quickly decided to order an appetizer of the grilled portuguese sausage, “flamed at tableside.”

They then sliced it up for us.

And with each slice you could hear a crispy crackle through the outside of the casing.

It smelled great, but it tasted even better.  A little on the tough side, but somehow that didn’t matter as the crispiness gave way to an incredibly flavorful (yet not spicy) filling.

Under the recommendation of our hosts, I ordered the surf and turf on a hot sizzling stone.  It came out with the meat set on a metal plate, along with butter and a lemon.

And a side of homemade chips and rice.

But the main event was truly the “cook your own” meat.  This stone came out blazing hot, and you slap your meat and shrimp on there and let it go.  My cousin gave us the tip that you don’t trim it up beforehand, but rather put it all on the stone and then slice it thin and eat after it cooks.  I was surprised, but it cooked up quickly and deliciously.  And sure enough, it was incredibly delicious.

My cousin got a shellfish stew which she gets every time and loves.

And Mike went with the paella with tons of seafood.  This was the biggest dish I have ever seen.  You can’t tell from the picture, but this was the width of a dinner plate and a few inches deep.  Everything tasted deliciously like the sea.

We really loved our meal at Valenca and I really think Portuguese food is a hugely under appreciated cuisine.  Every time I’ve had it, I’ve loved it.  If you find yourself near Elizabeth, NJ, Valenca is definitely a great place to stop. It was a fun and different meal, and I highly recommend that hot sizzling stone!

Goldbely.com: Jeni’s Ice Cream Sandwiches (from Columbus, OH)

5 Nov

As soon as I read about Goldbely.com, I knew I had found a site that I would love.  They aggregate (and curate) some of the best local foods from around the country and allow you to order them to be shipped fresh, right to your door.  You can order a steak from Peter Luger Steakhouse in Brooklyn, a deep dish pizza from Lou Malnati’s in Chicago, or ice cream sandwiches from Jeni’s of Columbus, Ohio fame.  They have a really good showing from some of NYC’s best with Katz’s Deli, Zabar’s, Barney Greengrass, Sarah Beth’s, Seredipity 3 (and their famous Frrrozen hot chocolate), some black and white cookies, and even our favorite corner butcher, Esposito’s.  And that’s just a sampling.

I held an “ice cream party” for my team at work to celebrate their good, hard work over the summer and ordered up those Jeni’s Macaroon ice cream sandwiches.  I got two packs of 8, which had 4 flavors:

Salty Caramel with Smoked Almonds

Chocolate Hazelnut

Orchid Vanilla Bean

Oatmeal Cream

We split each of them into quarters and dug in.

Each one was better than the last.  Though I think the salty caramel won out by a smidge for me.  The chocolate hazelnut was a very close second, however.  And they were all really great and a really fun treat for everyone.

They kept me very updated on when it would be delivered and it came incredibly fast.  I also don’t feel like they are ridiculously upcharged, and it all seemed worth it for the experience (and much cheaper than a plane ticket and a hotel!)

I also recommended Cranberry Island Kitchen to Goldbely (they have a recommendation option at the bottom of the page).  Cranberry Island Kitchen made the whoopie pies we had at our wedding, which were stupendous. Luckily, Goldbely liked them as much as we did and they are already up on the site!

And hey, if you do decide sign up, if you use my link you will get $20 off an order of $50 or more and I’ll get some credit to buy more treats… so you know… do yourself AND NYCNomNom a favor and use my referral link: http://curebit.com/x/ZKby7A  (and no… I wasn’t paid for this review… I just really really dig Goldbely!)

Brooklyn Fare Manhattan is OPEN

3 Nov

Brooklyn Fare has become quite famous for their (impressive) Chef’s Table, which we tried for my birthday dinner this year.  It is Brooklyn’s only 3 Michelin Star restaurant and our experience agreed that it warranted each of those stars.

Besides being a very cool dining experience, it is also a gourmet grocery store.

It was announced recently that they were opening up a Manhattan outpost, and it just so happened to be a half block from our apartment. (It’s on 37th Street between 9th and 10th Avenues)

An area severely devoid of grocery stores.

So we have been keeping a keen watch on the storefront for its opening, which finally occurred last week.

We went for a visit to get some groceries today and, as no surprise, this is a welcome addition to the neighborhood.

It was organized quite well with lots of great fresh produce.  Including these insanely oversized yams.

They also have a lot of more gourmet groceries, including a few of my clients, such as this half an end-cap for Garofalo Pasta (we do media advertising for small to mid-size brands… my day job).  I was turned on to Garofalo Pasta when they came in as a new client, and quickly came to appreciate the brand. Great pasta. Truly.

I was also quite impressed by their cheese section and their prepared foods looked great.  I’m a bit concerned that their check-out area is quite small, and that this little secret won’t stay a secret forever.  I can see this becoming quite crammed as soon as word gets out, but for now, I’m going to appreciate being in on a little neighborhood “gem” (that happens to be one of the most buzzed about places in Brooklyn these past few years).

Brooklyn Fare Manhattan may not replace my love affair with Fresh Direct (not only do they deliver, but their prices are very good), but it’s great to have them so close.  I am sure we will be frequent visitors and I cannot wait for the Chef’s Table to open up at this branch.

Welcome to the neighborhood!
