Restaurant Week Summer 2013: Todd English Food Hall at The Plaza

We have been meaning to stop by the Todd English Food Hall at The Plaza (hotel) for a while. Restaurant Week seemed as good a time as any!

There are lots of stations in the Food Hall (flatbread pizza, asian, dumplings, cheese, tacos, etc).

We were seated at the raw bar but were encouraged to explore and order from wherever we wanted.

I do really love watching people cook and prepare food. And now that Mike and I tried our own hands at shucking oysters ourselves, I have even more respect for this artform.

Their regular menu is extensive with items in every section, however, the Restaurant Week menus is very small.  To get a real sampling of the restaurant to make people want to return, it would have been nice if they offered selections from all of their stations.  While most restaurants serve a menu about this size for Restaurant Week, I think Todd English Food Hall would have really benefited from an ilili style restaurant week where you get to select one from each section.  It would have brought the “Food Hall” concept more to life for someone getting their first taste.

For this reason, we ordered one Restaurant Week meal and 2 additional appetizers.  First, the regular menu appetizers:

These were described as savory lobster & polenta dumplings with truffle aioli.

They had chunks of lobster inside and that truffle aioli was sensational.  I wish they were a wee bit crispier, but the flavors were all there.  Great dish. Our favorite of the night.

Our other regular menu order was Grilled Artichokes with king crab and lemon-caper vinaigrette. This actually came out AFTER the other entrees but trying to condense non-Restaurant Week together.  Also, it was weird it came out later, but more on the service in a moment.

This dish was so close to awesome.  The crab stuffing was insanely good and the croutons added a great flavor and crunch to the whole dish.

The disappointing part was actually the artichoke itself.  The flavor of it was just okay (not very artichoke-y) and the outer leaves were too woody.  We both took a first scoop and wound up having to very politely spit out most of our food because we just couldn’t chew through the tough outer leavers. I wound up scraping a few, but that was a messy endeavor.  As a self-proclaimed artichoke connoisseur, I know a thing or two about preparation.  And these were a miss.  They either needed to use a jerusalem artichoke that you can eat the outer leaves on, serve it more upright so you can scrape the leaves, or just serve the hearts. Honestly, this would have been great had they used just the soft leaves and hearts and put that on top of the crab stuffing.

As for the Restaurant Week menu, we started with the Asada Skirt Steak Tacos. This was brown sugar balsamic glazed with cilantro cream, hoisin BBQ sauce, fried onion, and napa slaw.

The highlights of this dish were the flavorful soft tacos (I think they were flour, but I’m never sure since I don’t eat them very often) and the crispy fried onions on top.  The sauce as pretty good and the steak was decent, but it would have been sensational with some char or some more steak flavor.  It fell a bit short in the meat flavor department.

For the second course, we chose the ricotta gnocchi saltimbocca with asparagus, duck confit, capers, and brown butter.  When it was served to us, I immediately was turned off by the plating.  It looked like someone spilled sauce all over the plate and then put everything on top.  Sure enough, the dish was also a bit muddy and confused.  The flavors really just kind of became bland together and nothing really stood out here.  The gnocchi was well prepared and I liked the ricotta taste, but they just didn’t sing.  The asparagus was a bit over cooked and bland and the duck confit just didn’t have pop.  The only real flavor of note was the capers. Muddy is the only way I can describe this dish. Not bad, but not noteworthy either.

For dessert, we had the Restaurant Week cobbler.

I liked the fresh berries in conjunction with the cooked berries (I recognized blueberries and apples or pears).  The topping was just okay. A decent sweet to end the evening, but nothing special.

And now to explain the service. It was… weird. We would finish dishes and sit in front of dirty plates for a while, then each new dish was brought out and the waiters fumbled and looked uncomfortable while we pushed our own dirty dishes to the side so they could put the fresh dish down.  Then they would clear the other dish.  This happened every single time.

It also seemed a bit strange that the artichoke (on the appetizer menu) was served after the entree, but that wasn’t too big an issue.  One minor thing that drove me a bit nuts, however, was that the cobbler was served with big forks. Check out the fork to bowl ratio in this photo:

It left me staring down at that bowl of melty berry and ice cream goodness with no way of retrieving it.  This dish needed a spoon.

Most of the mistakes were pretty inconsequential, but it made for a bit of an odd meal.  Also, the Restaurant Week dishes were just okay and we enjoyed the other 2 dishes more. So I cannot say I would recommend their RW menu. With the flaws, this restaurant really seemed to lakc executional consistency.  That artichoke dish could have been one of the best, but the woody, inedible artichoke leaves just killed it.

As the meal ended, we reflected on the few Todd English places we have tried (Olives for Restaurant Week, CaVa, and Ember Room). They have all been pretty good, but very little linking them. I feel like Todd English does a good job of stamping his name on places of quality with a nice design aesthetic, but I can’t say I really *like* Todd English restaurants or even know the Todd English point-of-view.

Then again, reading that paragraph back over makes me feel like I’m watching too much Next Food Network Star recently.

Albert Hall Tavern- A new, fantastic arrival

There are VERY few places that I dine at and then run right home to blog about.  In fact, this may very well be the first time (I left this place 15 minutes ago).  Albert Hall Tavern is located at 508 9th Ave (between 38th and 39th Streets).  Their site (www.alberthalltavern.com) isn’t yet live (which is hardly surprisingly, since they have been open less than ONE WEEK).  Their phone number is 646-490-4803, however, if you want to get in touch.

I live in a neighborhood that isn’t well known for go-to dining establishments.  Sure, there are delicious places in Times Square, and there are a number of Hell’s Kitchen restaurants that are go-to, but the area on 9th Avenue near Port Authority isn’t exactly known as a mecca for cuisine.

So when Mike and I noticed that a new tavern was opening up in a space that was recently a short lived velvet rope night club (non-sensical for this area), we checked out the menu.  It looked great.  Some really delicious sounding dishes (bone marrow, short rib ravioli, a Thursday special just called “pig”) and a nice looking inside (that we could see when we peered through the window) made us both say to each other, “we need to try this place.” (They opened on New Year’s Eve.)

So tonight, when my coworkers wanted to go out for happy hour, I suggested we try the new place. When we walked in, it seemed a little fancy, but with a great draft beer selection and some good rock music (the kind you just love to sing along to) playing. 

We quickly noticed that they had an interesting selection of beers, most of which we couldn’t pronounce, but sounded promising.  Our bartender (Brian, I think) mentioned that he appreciated our selections and quickly poured us our taps.  We all tried our beers and made various “wow” type sound.  We all mentioned how much we were each enjoying our various selections, however, one stood out;  Adam chose a German wheat beer, Weihenstephan.  Turns out, it’s the oldest brewery in the world (nearly 1,000 years old!) We all wound up ending with this beer and enjoying it thoroughly.

We also asked for the bone marrow appetizer, which included beets and braised beef.  (SOLD!)  It came and we all managed to give the bones extra scrapes, and commented on how delicious the braised beef was.  It was heavenly.   From start to finish.

We struck up a conversation with our bartender about visiting the south (where he’s from) and I think we were all taken aback by how “at home” we immediately felt in this place.

One of the managers came up to us soon after and brought us artichoke dip, compliments of the chef.

We were immediately impressed by the (obviously) homemade potato chips on top.  While we all wanted to dip them, they were too fragile, so they acted as a perfect crunchy topping as we ate this with our forks. 

I was thoroughly impressed.  As someone that LOVES artichokes and has eaten artichoke dip in many restaurants, I was really intrigued at how fresh the artichokes were, how unique this dip was, and how it didn’t have any of that mealy texture that is so popular in artichoke dip.  I’m not sure there was spinach in this.  It just tasted like fresh artichokes and cheese.

We wound up chatting with the manager and the owner, and found out the future plans include making the back into a “game room” where they plan to serve whole suckling pigs to private parties.  They plan on making brunch a big deal in the next few weeks and plan on being open for lunch soon. 

I was so impressed by this place.  Fantastic beer selection, the food we tried was unique and delicious, and the staff was so hospitable and friendly.  It’s the kind of place I can see finally becoming my neighborhood go-to. 

They have shrimp by the pound where you can get a whole meal for about $10.  And we were advised to try their oysters.

When Mike got home from work, I actually debated turning right around and going back for dinner.

The High Line and The Park

The High Line is a very long awaited elevated park that runs along the West side of Manhattan. The story of The High Line goes back over a decade when people saw beauty in a very old elevated railway that was about to be demolished.  It took a lot of education, economic rationalization, and celebrity support to open up a beautiful esplanade-type park west of 10th Ave.  Now anyone that doesn’t know that area, it was a place no one went many years ago.  It has since turned into the very trendy Meat Packing District and South Chelsea with some of the best designers and famous chefs opening in the neighborhood.  I heard a rumor that they couldn’t sell an apartment for $300K (yes, that’s cheap in NYC) on 10th Ave and 13th Street and now they are selling in the millions with access directly to the High Line. 

I’d heard that it was so popular that at times they were only allowing people to walk from South to North (currently Gansevort Street to 20th Street, extending to 30th Street in 2010) and today was one of those days.  Not only could you only walk in one direction, but there was a line to enter. Normally I only do lines in Disney World, and only for the good attractions, but I was willing to wait for this NYC novelty on such a beautiful day and it wound up taking less than 15 minutes.  The park was everything I heard it would be, a beautiful architectural combination of the old rail yard with “wildflowers” overlooking an evolving part of the city.  They did an amazing job of blending the old with the new and I really enjoyed it. 

Upon our exit at 20th Street, I immediately remembered hearing good things about Cookshop (on the corner of 20th Street and 10th Ave) but they weren’t supplying their dinner menu until 5:30 (we were in the market for an early, 4:45 dinner since we hadn’t eaten yet all day).  We walked down the street and stumbled upon The Park and were immediately impressed by the outdoor yet indoor patio, huge expanse of a restaurant, and the menu selection.  I especially like the gnomes we were sat next to.

The bread we were immediately served, with our red sangria, was moist and delicious with a really nice olive oil.  The sangria at first tasted so-so, but it quickly did the trick and was quite refreshing on a warm day.

As a voracious artichoke lover, I went for the steamed artichoke app.  It could have been cooked a little more, and a bit bigger since I can make these babies at home, but the sauce was really great.  It was a Lemon Beurre Blanc and went perfectly with the artichoke.Artichoke

Mike ordered the Yellow Fin Tuna with Eggplant Couscous and Miso Ginger Vinaigrette.  The tuna was cooked well and the couscous decent, but the Miso Ginger Vinaigrete was especially delicious.

I went with the center cut pork chops marinated in molasses in a fresh peach sauce with grilled plums.  The plums were very good (though a little tart, so they needed the peach sauce) and the pork chop itself was cooked well and good, though nothing show stopping.  The sauce, however, WOW! (Noticing a theme yet?)  I actually wound up eating the remainder of the sauce with my fork, it was just that good.  I wanted to drink it with a straw.

As for a “Stumble Upon,” Mike and I are still very lucky.  Overall it was a very good meal, but the sauces pushed it over the top.  Bonus 1/2 Nom Point for the sauces.
