Florida Noms: Max’s Grille (Boca Raton)

30 May

When Mike and I headed to Florida for a family wedding, I was excited to see an area of Florida that I had never been in: Boca Raton.  I heard about the Rat’s Mouth as the haven of Rich Retirees.  I was a bit surprised when most of it looked like a glossed up luxury strip mall, but I tried to get past my strange distaste for all shopping quarters that are outside and tried to remind myself that when the weather is always warm, strip malls are not the same as in New Jersey.  So we parked and scoped out a place for brunch in Mizner Park. After perusing some lovely high-end stores and finding an awesome little tea and spice shop called The Spice & Tea Exchange, we stumble on Max’s Grille which had a lovely outdoor patio… in the strip mall (stop judging Sara… stop judging).

As I went to take the picture of the sign, our waiter walked right into the shot and made such an awesome face that I just couldn’t crop it out.

Then we had a lovely little friend join us, who was damn cute even without the tail.

Mike got the smoked salmon BLT, which was fine but somehow lacking.

I got the eggs benedict which was… not good.  Boring english muffins, bland hollandaise, tasteless spinach…

And poorly poached eggs…

But it did make for a lovely glamour shot.

Oh well!  It filled us up, we got to eat outside in the middle of what would have been a sub-freezing day in Manhattan, and it didn’t cost an arm and a leg.  It was fine, but I wouldn’t go back.

Albert Hall Tavern- Back for Brunch

9 Mar

Yes… I am writing another post about Albert Hall Tavern.  I can’t let new meals come up and not try them!

We managed to get there to try their brunch.  I was hoping a bit for some bumped up, fancy brunch choices.  But it’s mostly just the classics here.  Here’s the menu:

Then they have a number of items from their dinner menu.

Mike chose to get the smoked salmon bagel, which came with capers and smoked cream cheese.  The salmon was REALLY fresh and full of flavor.

DSCF3712

They had no fried potatoes of any kind (bummer), so we split my second favorite hangover brunch food… a side of the bacon (extra crispy).

I got the eggs benedict with Canadian Bacon and “tomato hollandaise.” I’m not sure what made the hollandaise tomato, but it was good.  And the ham and eggs were cooked perfectly.  I wish it were served on a potato pancake, but that’s probably just my incredible fascination with fried potatoes during brunch.

Albert Hall Tavern is one of the very few places in the neighborhood that do all-day brunch.  It has a lot of classic items, and while I like a little more panache in my brunch, this was still a very good classic brunch menu with well cooked comfort food.  (I just wish they had damn good potatoes! Or something like The Heap from Thumbs Up Diner.  I feel like Chef Bill could do a damn good heap)

The Popover Cafe

27 Dec

The Popover Cafe is on 86th Street and Amsterdam Ave.  My sister recommended  it to me since I am such a huge popover fan.

The inside was quaint and a great setting.  The menu mentioned that the owner decided to cook her favorite foods and that people just kept coming back for more.  It definitely all had that “homemade” feel, from decor to food.

They had some hot winter drinks on the menu, which quickly made me think that more restaurants should do this.  I got the warm cider punch.

DSCF2726

And Mike got a hot chocolate.

DSCF2727

We started with the mini popovers.

DSCF2729

They were a perfect 4 bite portion.

And we got them with apple butter (along with regular butter and strawberry butter).  The minis were okay, but part of what makes popovers so great is all the delicious fluffy center.

DSCF2733

Mike got the eggs benedict that came on an open popover.

DSCF2735

I got the Kobe Beef Corned Beef Hash.  It was a delicious blend of beef and potatoes, topped with a scrambled egg.  It was delicious!

DSCF2737

And the popover was just perfect.   AND HUGE!

DSCF2738

Flakey (but not overly eggy) on the inside.

I absolutely loved my meal.  It was just wonderful comfort food and sent over the edge by delicious popovers.

I highly recommend the journey to the Upper West Side, especially if you love popovers.
