Sylvia’s- Harlem

12 Apr

Sometimes you just need some soul food.  So we took a pilgrimage up to Harlem to finally check out Sylvia’s.

We noticed that there was a beer on the menu from Harlem Brewing Company.  When in Rome…

It was quite good, especially with the rich food.

The bread was old fashioned corn bread served with, what else, Fleichmann’s margarine.

And then the food started arriving…

Fried chicken with sweet potatoes and mac and cheese… OHHHH the mac and cheese.

Chicken and waffles.

Smothered pork chops with green beans and mac and cheese… OHHH the mac and cheese.

More chicken and more waffles.

And more mac and cheese… OHHH the mac and cheese.

Everything was really delightful. The fried chicken had a great crisp to it and wasn’t greasy at all.  I had the chicken and waffles and the waffle was really fantastic. There is something quite spectacular about maple syrup on the waffles and chicken.

But OH the mac and cheese.  It was heavenly.  Perfectly baked, perfectly cheesy, perfect perfect perfect. I consider myself a mac and cheese connoisseur and this, this was GREAT mac and cheese.  Up there with Blue Smoke (which is the best flavor but a little too saucy) and Chat ‘n Chew (which is #1 in my book, however, it’s inconsistent).

We really wanted the peach cobbler for dessert, but they were out.

::pout::

So we got red velvet cake (which was good, but I’m not a red velvet cake fan).

The strawberry bread pudding with bourbon sauce (really delicious).

And the southern style banana pudding.  Also pretty good.

I can’t say I LOVED the desserts, but the meal was great and that mac and cheese…. OH that mac and cheese.

Delta Grill

24 Jan

I had a long overdue dinner planned with a friend of mine and she suggested we try Delta Grill, which is on 9th Ave at 48th Street.  It’s a New Orleans themed restaurant that can just as easily be a tavern as it can be a sports bar.

Iris got the pork chops, and she was nice enough to give me a bite. These were quite good and the portion was about 4 times of any pork chop I’ve ever cooked.  They DO NOT skimp!

We also split a side of the mac and cheese.  This looked great, but I wanted it to be better.

I was trying to be a little healthy, so I went with the shrimp etouffe.  It was delicious!  The sauce was perfect and the shrimp had great flavor.  Even the rice was perfectly fluffy.  I really enjoyed this.

This was a very enjoyable meal and I will definitely be back.

Eatery

28 Oct

I have been to Eatery at least half a dozen times, and it’s always a good meal. I happen to love their mac & cheese with the frizzled onions on top, however, I try not to pig out there TOO often. One thing I used to love about them were their shrimp chip-things (I call them “chip-things” because they aren’t really chips… they are more the consistency of puffed rice in a chip shape and size). Unfortunately, due to an apparent HUGE shellfish allergy problem in NYC, they have abandoned the shrimp chips and now just give out sesame seed chips. It is a big loss, however, these chips are tasty and nearly as addictive as the original.

One of our dining partners is only in the city every once in a while, so we told her to feel no guilt about getting the mac & cheese. I’m glad she did because I even got a bite!

Our other fellow diner got the burger which looked quite tasty.

I went with an appetizer special: duck ravioli. I am failing to remember the specifics, but I remember it sounded absolutely amazing and tasted good… but not great.

The winning dish was actually a last second ordered side of blue cheese mashed potatoes. This stuff was like crack!

Overall, I think Eatery is a good place to go where everyone will find something they like at a reasonable (for NYC) price (but not cheap).
