Dewar’s Discovery: Scotch Tasting

8 Dec

I am not a Scotch fan.  I usually relate it to burning away the flesh from the inside of my throat (is it “flesh” on the inside of your throat? I don’t think so… hmmm).  But I am always willing to give something new a try, especially when it’s free.

Dewar’s was hosting a “Discovery” tasting and Mike and I quickly signed up to join Lori and her boyfriend, Kevin, on the journey.  (Lori managed to blog about this in a MUCH more timely manner that I did)

It wasn’t overly efficient to get in.  We got on line early and waited until about 10 minutes after they were supposed to start until they let us in… which meant getting into a giant elevator with the 30 people that were behind us.  And what happens when you’re first into an elevator?  Yup! Last out.  And Lori and I were both in mildly uncomfortable shoes and I really had to pee!  This was not starting off well…

Luckily, we were still able to snag some seats in the far corner to rest our feet during the initial meet and greet, that included a bar with 3 Dewar’s drinks and some passed around apps.

aIMG_0865

The 3 drinks on the menu were the Dewars 12 year Scotch on the rocks, Dewars & Ginger Ale, and the Smash, which was like a mojito.  Mike went in for the kill and got in the rocks.  I got the Smash (along with Kevin) and Lori went with the Scotch and Ginger.  I actually was pleasantly suprised at how much I liked each of them.  (Though on the rocks was still a bit much for me).

Our little table was nicely decorated with some Worldly things.

aIMG_0866

And the room and some nice multimedia screens set up, talking about Dewars heritage and how their White Label is the #1 sold Scotch in the US (WOW!)

aIMG_0864

The food was… unfortunate.  Nothing was particularly good and we were on the other side of the room from the kitchen so by the time they made it even halfway to us, their trays were empty.  (Luckily Mike and Lori jumped up to greet them at their door on a few occasions and brought us back the spoils)

We were let into the room a while later and I think we were all surprised to see a chemistry set all prepared at each seat.  (The nerd in me SQUEALED in delight).

We also had some lovely glasses set up in front and behind our chemistry set.

The speaker was very good, very charismatic, and took us on our Dewar’s Discovery.  He told us that Dewar’s White Label outsells other scotch brands 2 to 1 (WHO KNEW?!)

DSCF2257

We learned some gaelic and that a scotch whiskey, by law, has to contain (malt) barley, water, and is aged in wood.  Meanwhile, my ADD kicked in and I noticed there was a secret at the bottom of my glass… so I took a picture of it.  And now… I have no idea what it says. 🙂 “The Glenc??? Glass”

The speaker went on to tell us about how Dewar’s came to be.  I took some notes, but they are spotty.  You will be able to tell that I zeroed in on the things that interested me most (such as a quote from Johnny, the founder: “If you don’t advertise, you fossilize!”)

And then… THE MIXING BEGAN!  He had us take a whiff of each of the flavor options… Honey, Fruity, Floral, Vanilla, and Smoky.

Then we picked our favorite scent and mixed it into the scotch base.  I, not surprisingly, chose vanilla.

We were then asked to add drops of the others until we liked the SMELL (not taste mind you… smell).

DSCF2273

I got mine to a happy point and took a taste.  Though not before a “slonga!” was passed around the table. (“Slonga” is short for “slongiva” which translates into “cheers” in Gaelic)

After we mixed our own, the waitresses all came out with another glass on trays so we could try the 18-year aged Scotch (which isn’t on the market yet).  It was great! Nice and smooth… I could even drink it on the rocks.

Lori and Kevin enjoyed as well.

It was a blast and a VERY fun way to spend an evening.  And I was pretty impressed at the presentation (besides the entry system and the food).  It has made me into a SOMETiMES Scotch drinker… which is a vast improvement over the NEVER of before.

I hadn’t eaten anything for most of the day, however, so I left there feeling quite delicious and working hard to walk in a straight line.   Good thing we were in a great foodie neighborhood (Meatpacking near the Chelsea Market).  We tried to get into Colicchio and Sons, however, they had an odd “snag a chair at the bar” system that made me feel like a stalker… so we went to Cookshop and had a FABULOUS meal there. More on that Nom later!

Grub Street Food Festival ::UPDATES!::

6 Dec

I was SO excited when I heard that Grub Street (the food section of New York Magazine) was going to be holding a food festival when some of my favorite people were in town to visit.  I immediately picked this as our first destination.  Some fantastic restaurants that I had wanted to try were going to be all in one place.  I was SO excited!

IMG_1007

And then we got there… It was being held in a very small, fenced off area and it was packed TO THE GILLS.  I’m not sure if it’s because I’m short, but I HATE being in a place where I can’t see past a huge group of people.  ESPECIALLY when I want food!  You couldn’t see where lines began or ended nor what each place was offering.  I would have GLADLY waited on line for many of these places, however, it was so damn packed that it was uncomfortable and frustrating.  I was ready to throw in the towel, but the team calmed me down and came up with a plan of attack.  We would all find one place with interesting stuff, get it, and meet back towards the front to share our spoils.  Ready… Set… GO!

IMG_0998

The first place that caught my eye was selling chocolate chip pretzel cookies. So I got one of those and it was unique and delicious.  Surprisingly soft.  Unfortunately, I never got enough room to take a picture of where it came from.

IMG_1006

UPDATE: In a fortuitous turn of events, I happened upon a stand for this very company when I went to the Columbus Circle Holiday Market this past weekend.  So now I know… Sigmund Pretzelshop make fine pretzel cookies!

I also decided to try the cheddar truffle pretzel while I was there this weekend.  It was good, but could have been more truffly. 🙂

I REALLY wanted some risotto balls that were being cooked near the front, however, they obviously didn’t anticipate the amount of people and said it would be at least 10-15 minutes before new ones were out.  I diligently waited since it was near our waiting spot, however, when they finally came out there were only about 6 to buy… so I didn’t get one.

I still had a bit more time, so I found a place near our meeting spot with a shortish line called The Smile that was serving grilled cheese sandwiches.  It was good, but a bit too generic.  Not exactly what I would serve to people to convince them to come in to try a meal.

IMG_1002

Mike proudly came back with a short rib sandwich.  It was VERY tasty! Wish I knew where it came from…

IMG_1004

Our friend Sarah came back with an empanada.  I couldn’t eat it, but I hear it was good.

IMG_1003

Our friend Mark, however, came back with the winner… Fried Pumpkin Pie.  GENIUS!  Everything about this was sensational!  If I knew where this came from, I’d get this again in a heartbeat.

UPDATE 2!  Thank you Lillian for sending me this link that talks about what to eat at the festival.  Here I learned that the fried pumpkin pies came from Melt Bakery.  (By perusing their site, I found out that they have classes!  I also found out that they DELIVER! And they are most famous for their ice cream sandwiches.  Goodbye diet… HELLO Melt Bakery!)

IMG_1005

A funny side-note, however… Bethenny Frankel (best known for being on the Real Housewives of New York), was filming her new(ish) show at the festival when we arrived.  Mike even gave her a fond “How You Doin?”  She had a full crew with her, and I’m surprised she was there with all of the people.  But it was a fun local celeb siting.

It pains me at how frustratingly crowded this was.   The small, gated area made it quite miserable.  I hope that they will do this again, only do it in a larger area that isn’t so confined.  I probably would have spent a good deal of money trying the various places, happily waited on line, and returned to my favorites for full meals later on.  What a loss.  BUMMER!

Next time Grub Street Food Festival… Next time!

Stecchino

3 Dec

Mike and I were looking for a place to eat in Hell’s Kitchen and stumbled upon Stecchino, a wine bar on 9th between 51st and 52nd.  I remember walking in with excitement about the Specials.

Oddly… we were never told about them inside and I forgot.  D’oh!  Miss #1.

We were also there during Happy Hour but not a thing was mentioned about those nice deals either.  Miss #2.

IMG_0786

We sat down and I immediately zeroed in on the Crisp Serrano Wrapped Artichoke & Manchego.  Three of my favoritest things.

IMG_0776

I thought it was good… but it wasn’t as crisp as I would have wanted from something that is CALLED “crisp” and the artichoke flavor was almost entirely lost, but it was still delicious.  Miss #3.

IMG_0777

We also ordered the bruschetta that came with wild mushrooms, sundried tomatoes, arugula, gorgonzola, and truffle oil.  It was DELICIOUS… but…

IMG_0778

What kind of idiot decided to put brown paper below these (purposefully) oily dishes?! It just made it look unappealing.  (BIG) Miss #4.

IMG_0780

Mike chose the Black Pepper Crusted Steak Salad with mixed greens, sundried tomatoes, balsamic vinaigrette and crumbled bleu cheese topped with shoestring potatoes.  I liked the idea of the shoestring potatoes, however, they were neither soft nor crispy.  Weird.  Miss #5.

IMG_0781

I chose the Fresh Tagliatelle with wild mushrooms & ricotta salata.  It was really good and topped with cute cheese spirals, however, it was just slightly lacking in flavor somehow. Miss #6.

IMG_0783

Overall, Stecchino was ALMOST excellent, but had all these little misses along the way that weren’t deal breakers, but definitely made it lose points along the way.   I’d give it another try… but seriously, someone get rid of those brown paper plate liners!  EW!
