Stowe, VT: Harrison’s

28 Jan

Our first night in Stowe, VT brought us to Harrison’s.  It had that local feel where you immediately felt comfortable.

Especially over a beer.

Or a cup ‘a’ chowdah.

We tried the spinach and artichoke dip, which I really enjoyed.  The swiss and mascarpone cheese combination was really great.

Our friend got the salmon, which he enjoyed.

I got the Butternut Squash Ravioli and added scallops to it.  This was described as Vermont fresh butternut squash & pumpkin stuffed ravioli, cranberry, apple cider & port wine pan sauce, fresh sage, crispy pancetta, sauteed baby spinach, cherry tomatoes, shaved Fontina cheese.

This dish was… confused. I thought maybe it was my having added scallops to a dish where they probably didn’t belong, however, one of our friends had the same dish without the scallops and we agreed. The balance of sweet was just not right. It had a very strange flavor that just didn’t work.  I couldn’t put my finger on it, and I really can’t describe it, but it was not an enjoyable dish.

And that was a shame. I really wanted to like this place.

But I didn’t.

Damn.

Stowe, VT: Brass Lantern Inn Bed & Breakfast

23 Jan

Heading up to ski in Stowe this winter?  Thinking about spending some time in VT even if you’re not a snow buddy?  These next few weeks I’ll post a wrap-up of all the great places we visiting in and around Stowe, Vermont.

We were invited up to Stowe by some friends who go up almost every year around Christmas time.  Even though  none of us are skiers, we all looked forward to a relaxing weekend in a beautiful part of this country.

Our friends have been guests at The Brass Lantern Inn Bed and Breakfast a number of times before, and we were excited to join them.  We went up on a very icy weekend.

We spent a good amount of time on the couches by the fire place, playing games (especially Cards Against Humanity), reading, and drinking.

Oh and playing piano. (or… at least… trying to)

The rooms were incredibly comfortable and very New Englandy.

Each morning, breakfast was posted on a white board.

And there is coffee, tea, and hot chocolate available.

IMG_4959

And some local maple syrup and butter. (More on a Cabot in a later post)

The french toast was really great, and I loved the baked apples.

I loved the fruit parfait with really delicious yogurt and granola that tasted very homemade.

The frittata and home fries (sweet potato and yukon gold) was one of my favorite breakfasts that weekend.

These were awesome blueberry pancakes, and that fresh maple syrup on them were fantastic.

We really enjoyed our stay and I would highly recommend this inn (and their delicious breakfasts) to anyone.

The innkeepers, Mary Anne and George, couldn’t be more welcoming and helpful.

A wonderful long weekend away!

Milwaukee’s Mitchell Airport: Nonna Bartolotta’s

14 Nov

As our 24 hour whirlwind adventure to Wisconsin drew to a close, we drove back from Green Bay and had very little time to spare, so we decided to grab food in the airport.

We breezed through security, and I was highly amused at the sign just after.

We decided to try Nonna Bartolotta’s, based on Bartolotta’s great reputation of restaurants in the area (according to my coworker, who lived there for a bit).

The setting is good enough for airport dining, even with the fake bricks.

My coworker ordered the rigatoni.  She said it was just okay.

I got the chicken panini, which came with oven roasted tomatoes and cheese.  I was a bit surprised when it came out as more like toast with some meat in the middle, but it was decent.  The rosemary potatoes with it, however, were pretty damn awful.  I really LIKE rosemary (like a lot) but this tasted so sour and woody that I couldn’t finish them.

So overall? Meh.

I’m sure their other restaurants are good, but this airport food was just airport food. Nothing too special.  100% average.
