Boulud Sud and using the Reserve App

I have been fortunate enough to amass a network of really smart people throughout my life.  One perk of working in digital technology for a few years is that connected me with some great minds who are always developing.  One of those smarties brought the app, Reserve, into my life.  Reserve is like a virtual concierge that gets restaurant reservations at some exclusive restaurants (currently in New York City, Los Angeles, Boston, San Francisco and Chicago).  You pay a small fee and they get you in, but it also helps pay the bill because you just load everything into the app and (like Uber) once you’re done, you are done.  No need to wait for the bill nor for the waiter to come swipe your card.  You can just walk out.  Ahhhh technology.

I had been meaning to try it for a while, so one night when I was feeling especially energetic (a huge rarity now in my last month of pregnancy), I decided to see what they had available for a Friday night.  A little after 6pm I opened the app and requested a reservation from a few different restaurants in the areas I was interested.  By 7:30pm, we were sitting in Boulud Sud, a very good restaurant from Daniel Boulud, a place we had been t0 a few years prior and really enjoyed. (And were not sure why we had not returned to).

When we came in, we were greeted like royalty.  Apparently Reserve was so new that we were our waiter’s first Reserve table. And while he had been trained on the app, he was excited to have his first table.

We started with a lovely bread plate and oil.

We then tried the House-Made “Taramasalata” with Smoked Cod Roe and Dill Potato Chips.  It was all very tasty.

I went right for the crispy artichokes alla romana with Nipatella Aïoli. These were excellent. Great artichoke flavor and not a bit of greasiness.

We were then presented with a fun surprise.  The chef sent over a garden of season veggies “planted” in a dip whipped feta cheese topped with dehydrated Niçoise olives “dirt.”

What a lovely way to present (and enjoy) crudité.

Mike chose the lamb chops which came with a great variety of seasonal vegetables and was incredibly well cooked and flavored.

I got the gnocchi which also came with the freshest of vegetables from the season.  Another great dish that made Spring sing.

For dessert, Mike chose the Sweet Moroccan Couscous which came with a pomegranate poached pear with pistachio anglaise and lemon-yogurt gelato.

A very unexpected dessert, but very tasty.

I got the dish that I remembered most from Boulud Sud all those years ago: The Grapefruit Givré.

This came with sesame halva, rose loukoum, and grapefruit sorbet.  If it’s even possible, this was even better the second time.  I LOVE halva, so the shreds on top were really enjoyable with the crispy textures and smooth sorbet. A dessert I have never had anything remotely like before or since, and incredibly memorable.  Absolutely love it.

And then, as simple as that… the check was paid.

A fantastic restaurant.  A fantastic app.  I love when technology makes life easier.

I have been recommending Boulud Sud to many people over the years, and I’m very glad we went back again.  Hopefully there will be less time between our next visit.  (However, with baby probably days away, it’s anyone’s guess!)

Restaurant Week Winter 2014: City Hall

For Restaurant Week Winter 2014, we made 3 reservations: City Hall on Duane Street near West Broadway, Butter Midtown on 45th St near 6th Ave, and Villard Michel Richard at Madison and 51st St.

Unfortunately, upon showing up at Butter Midtown, we found out that they do not participate in Restaurant Week on Sundays, which was disappointing since our last Butter Restaurant Week experience at the downtown restaurant (which is apparently closed now?) was so great.  (And it became even more disappointing after we actually ate there… more on that in a review coming soon).

So our first Restaurant Week experience wound up being at City Hall in TriBeCa with some old friends and new friends.

The dining room is set up nicely so there are a lot of tables but it still feels somehow private.  The building and space is quite beautiful with a very Old New York feeling. They even have a lot of old pictures of New York backlit around the top of the walls.

We were given some some (pickled?) veggies (carrots, pickles, green tomatoes) upon seating.

And they quickly took our orders, which most of us took from the Restaurant Week menu.

I went with the lamb chops with a mint chimichurri over kale. This was absolutely delicious, with great lamb flavor and a nice fresh mint and herb sauce.  Not much needed to make lamb taste great, but this was prepared very well. I was especially impressed that they were serving it for Restaurant Week.

Someone also got the scallops, which they said were tasty but the portion was SUPER small with one miniature scallop on the plate and one reasonably sized one.

Another friend got the salmon appetizer, which was a nice portion over a risotto that had squash in it. It was very nice.

Another person in our party ordered off the regular menu and she got the local field greens salad, which they seemed to enjoy.

Mike didn’t get the Restaurant Week menu either, but the chef didn’t want him to go without anything so they served him a very, very small amount of French Onion soup.  It was about 1/4 inch in a small bowl with a crouton in it. While I appreciated the gesture a lot, it was a bit.. odd.  Very little soup and no cheese.  They would have been better serving it in a very small shot glass or something of the sort, because it just seemed funny when it was barely a bite in a cup.

We got a side of brussels sprouts off the menu that the entire table split when the entrees came out. They were caramelized and very, very tasty.

Two of our friends go the fish, but I cannot recall exactly what it was (and sadly, them menu is no longer posted), but it certainly didn’t photograph well. Luckily, I think it tasted better than it photographed and they both ate it all up.

I got the beef bourguignon over wide egg noodles.  The meat was fork tender and I enjoyed the dish, but I do with the sauce had a bit more punch to the flavor.

The regular menu offered Calves Liver “Milk-Fed” with sauteed onions.  I certainly was tempted to try this myself, and then I forgot to ask for a bite when it came (damn) but she gobbled it up and seemed to enjoy it.

Mike’s regular menu choice was  the burger. It was a big burger and Mike chose blue cheese, which he said was a bit overpowering.  It wasn’t anything too special but it was a decent burger.

For dessert, I got the chocolate with raspberry.  I remember enjoying it but it wasn’t overly memorable or special. Just a nice end to a nice dinner.

Overall, City Hall was a very good place to have dinner and the Restaurant Week menu was very good.  I don’t know if I feel the need to run right back, but I would absolutely recommend it if someone is looking for a place to eat in TriBeCa.

Blue Ribbon Sushi and Grill

One perk of my job is that I get to go on client dinners.  This supplements my expensive eating habits nicely.  Sometimes I wind up at places that are less than ideal (a recent trip to Dos Caminos left me in the prickly position of a waitress saying to me “there is NOTHING on the menu you can eat”… awesome) but sometimes I wind up trying awesome places like Blue Ribbon Sushi and Grill (on 58th Street between 8th and 9th Avenues in the 6 Columbus Hotel).

I had been there once before, however, this time I was with a coworker who knew the manager and he knew EXACTLY what to order.

We started with the lamb chops, which was yummy.  It even converted someone who typically doesn’t like lamb.  Winner.

It came over a delicious sweet potato puree.

Next up we ordered the pork belly.

It was a delicious slice of perfectly cook pork belly with a great balance of sweet and spicy veg on top.

We also ordered pork and shrimp dumpings, both of which were good, but no better than most NY Dim Sum.

They enjoyed an order of spicy ceviche. I’ll take their word for it that it was good.

We also ordered the duck, which came with orange teriyaki, cauliflower puree, and asian broccoli.  The skin on this was so perfectly crisp and the meat was so well cooked it almost melted in your mouth.  One of the top duck dishes I have had.

And then… heaven came out…

This was Oxtail Fried Rice.  It came with daikon, shiitake, and bone marrow.  The bone marrow was actually tucked inside an egg pocket.  See it broken open in the picture below.

This was unbelievable.  One of the best dishes I have ever had.  And it was rice.  The most delicious rice I have ever had!  I actually felt bad while eating this that Mike wasn’t enjoying it with me and look forward to bringing him back here soon just for this dish.  Add this to the list of dishes I will crave during bad days.  Om nom nom nom nom nom nom.

Just in case that wasn’t enough food, a sushi tray made its entrance.  I won’t go into the specifics (since I don’t remember them anyway) but I can tell you that every piece was awesome.

For dessert we got bread pudding and this made lovers out of haters.  It was insanely good, perfectly cooked, unbelievably tender and moist, and full of flavor.  YUM!

We also got green tea chocolate lava cake.  Awesome.  Simply awesome.

This was a fantastic meal.  Absolutely fantastic.  Knowing what to order is key.  I usually wouldn’t focus on the cooked food at a sushi restaurant, but don’t forget about the “Grill” part of their name.  It’s fantastic.

And that Oxtail Fried Rice… mmmmmmmmmmmmm
