Restaurant Week – Winter 2015: all’onda

6 Apr

I somehow forgot to post this during Restaurant Week (I blame baby brain), but I couldn’t leave out our fantastic dinner at all’onda! We had gone to all’onda once before right when it opened and loved it, and I’ve recommended it ever since.  While I kept saying we had to go back, their participation in Restaurant Week inspired me to make that reservation first.

Here was the Restaurant Week Winter 2015 Menu:

And the regular menu that night:

IMG_2534

I was impressed that the Restaurant Week menu listed both the Short Ribs (for 2) and the Bucatini with smoked uni.  Though both had an up charge, since both dishes are some of the best on the restaurant’s menu, it’s great to see there was the option to include them in a Restaurant Week tasting and the total cost was still a bargain.

We started off the menu and split the arancini. These were different from the squid ink ones we had last time, and instead came with black truffle and parmesan.

IMG_2536

Very good, but not quite as original as the squid ink ones. (Nor as beautiful)

IMG_2537

Back to the Restaurant Week menu, Mike went for the kale salad, which I thought was an odd choice from the other delicious things on the menu, but he enjoyed it.

IMG_2538

One of our friends went for the scallop crudo which was fresh and delicious.  Great combination of flavors.

IMG_2539

I got the grilled treviso with kobocha squash and aged balsamic.  (Looked it up: Treviso is a red radicchio)

It was packed with flavor and tasted just like the end of winter.

IMG_2542

Our meal was quite the spread when it all came out.

IMG_2548

We made fun of Mike for his entree choice as well… he got… the chicken. Now I love me a good chicken, but with all the amazing things on the menu, who gets the chicken?  He seemed very satisfied with his selection and the skin was quite crispy and it was well flavored (sorry for picking on you, honey!)

IMG_2553

Our friends split the short rib for two.

IMG_2545

Which could not have been more perfectly cooked. It was so tender on the inside with a great, slow cooked flavor and nicely charred outside.  A fantastic short rib.

IMG_2560

I got the skate, which was awesome.  Cooked so the ends were crispy, the inside tender, and the light sauce brightening.

IMG_2558

We added some sides we loved last time to split for the table, including the brussels sprouts.  The flavor of these sprouts is just fantastic.  All the right sweet, savory, and crunchiness.  Probably some of my favorite brussels in the city.

IMG_2549

And then the polenta with miso cured egg yolk and wild mushrooms. Every bite was sensational and it was hard to not dip back in for more and more.

IMG_2550

If the meal above was by itself, it would already be fantastic, but add on our favorite dish from the last time, the bucatini with smoked uni, and it rose itself back to star quality.  This dish is just so fantastic.  We got it without the spicy breadcrumbs and no one missed them.  The uni with the exquisitely cooked pasta and the sauce… it’s just one of the best flavor combinations ever.  I love this dish.

IMG_2555

We were full… but never too full for dessert.

The olive oil cake with lemon and basil was moist and scrumptious.

IMG_2563

But most of the table chose the hazelnut mousse with chocolate crumble and candied orange.  A perfect way to end the meal with a bit of sweet and excellent execution.

IMG_2566

all’onda was one of our favorite meals in 2014 (#4 on the list to be exact) and we left this meal equally, if not more impressed.  If they participate in Restaurant Week in Summer 2015, make this your first reservation!  And if you’re looking for a great restaurant to have a really great meal, you can’t go wrong here.

New Restaurant Opening: Dirty French

30 Sep

The same fun foodie friends that tried (the absolutely awesome) Root & Bone with us made another reservation for us at a new restaurant within a few days of opening, Dirty French.  (I love having foodie couple friends!)

IMG_0754

Dirty French is the first French restaurant from Mario Carbone, Rich Torrisi, and Jeff Zalaznick, who brought us Carbone, Torrisi Italian Specialties, and Parm (the latter 2 I still need to visit!)

IMG_0756

They definitely paid attention to the details, with some awesome personalization of their knives.

And I noticed lots of pink roosters hanging around.

IMG_0757

And some super creepy heads (dead clowns maybe?) up on the wall.

DSCF3449

I had just had a great work meeting and was in a great mood when we sat down for dinner.  The high continued when they served us their table bread, which was a warm herbed flat bread of some kind with a cheese spread.

DSCF3439

It was good enough to have been a menu item.  We all loved it. And boy did it smell like heaven.

DSCF3441

A gentleman came by with a tray of oysters to show off.

DSCF3443

This is the first time I’ve seen that, and it was a winning move.  I wasn’t really considering ordering oysters prior to his visit, trying to jump right to the prepared foods, but with these pretty babies staring back at me, I just had to have some.

DSCF3442

We were then served a bowl that was shaped like another rooster.

DSCF3450

Which contained some little sides for the chicken (I believe).

DSCF3452

And then out came the chicken, which is “Presented in 2 Services.”  First service was the white meat, which was in a mustard sauce.

DSCF3454

They served it with tortilla like bread (which was unlimited and we got more of when we finished the first round) and sauces so you can kind of add sauces and ingredients to make it your own, similar to how peking duck is served.

The meat on this was so juicy and tender, with perfectly crisp skin. I can’t say it was as good as The NoMad chicken, but we all really enjoyed it. Especially the sauce (which surprised me as a non-mustard lover).

DSCF3455

We also ordered the veal, which I couldn’t have due to peppers, but everyone else really enjoyed it.

DSCF3460

My choice was the pork chop with apples.  Another mustard sauce that I actually really loved (am I becoming a convert?) and the pork was incredibly flavorful.

DSCF3464

I loved the apples with it.

DSCF3463

For the second service of the chicken, they served the dark meat… feet and all.

DSCF3467

The boys had some fun with being chicken models.

DSCF3465

Everyone also loved the legs. Sadly, I couldn’t have those either due to the peppers allergy.

Foot models?

DSCF3476

We got a side of the Bacon d’Hotel, which was meaty and thick and juicy and everything we wanted it to be.

DSCF3469

And a side of Pomme Frites which were unique and really fantastic.

DSCF3471

And a side of champignons (mushrooms) were a really great compliment to the rest of the meal.

DSCF3474

For dessert… we just couldn’t decide between the four options… so we went with all of them!

This is what took the meal from very good to great.  We all went around trying to decide which dessert was our favorite.

First was a coconut creme brulee which I thought tasted like vacation but some people thought tasted like sunscreen (though they claimed that wasn’t a bad thing).  I really enjoyed it.

DSCF3477

Next up was a pineapple… something.  I wish I remember what this was called because this was hands down my favorite.  The pineapple was caramelized and it was sensational.  I was deliriously happy when I was eating this. I was shocked at how good it tasted. Really took me (and the entire table) by surprise.

DSCF3479

Then a citrus tarte with meringue on top.  I thought this was really fantastic and loved the slightly browned meringue (I’m a meringue sucker!)

DSCF3480

And lastly, beignets with caramel sauce.  These were perfectly cooked, extra warm, and amazingly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. And that caramel sauce was over the top.  We all dipped a spoon in for one last bite before we finished.

DSCF3485

I’ve heard rumor that service has been an issue for some people, however, our service was fine (though not remarkable by any means). The man who appeared to be a sommelier seemed confused when we asked him where our waiter was and then he took our order… so I’m not sure if that was our assumption gone wrong or if he was filling in. But after that speed bump, we were just fine.

IMG_0753

Overall, I really enjoyed our meal.

I can’t say it was one of the best meals of the year, nor can I say “Go! Run! Now!” but it was definitely enjoyable.  I’m glad we tried it earlier but I do not have the urge to go back. I’d rather try other places.

Though I could do a run through for that pineapple dessert!

NYC Restaurant Week Summer 2014: Blue Smoke

2 Sep

Another work lunch just happened to be during Restaurant Week, so we decided to go to Blue Smoke BBQ in Flatiron. While they were serving the RW menu, most of us actually wound up ordering of the regular menu since their everyday menu is actually quite affordable for the quality of the food.

One thing on their RW menu that is always a hit with everyone is this chicken.  Great, crispy skin and tons of flavor.

IMG_9788

I got the vegetable special which was actually super weird… it was shaved root vegetables with a creamy sauce. It tasted good but the plating left a lot to be desired…

IMG_9791

But I also got their mac and cheese, which might be one of my favorite things on earth, so I was a happy camper.

IMG_9792

Overall, I always really enjoy Blue Smoke, whether at the restaurant or at Citi Field, and it’s a great catered lunch for work meetings, however, I’m not sure if I can say that it’s the best option for Restaurant Week.  It saves a bit of money, but their regular menu is very affordable. I would say just head here any time you are looking for good BBQ, regardless of Restaurant Week.
