New Restaurant Opening: Dirty French

30 Sep

The same fun foodie friends that tried (the absolutely awesome) Root & Bone with us made another reservation for us at a new restaurant within a few days of opening, Dirty French.  (I love having foodie couple friends!)

IMG_0754

Dirty French is the first French restaurant from Mario Carbone, Rich Torrisi, and Jeff Zalaznick, who brought us Carbone, Torrisi Italian Specialties, and Parm (the latter 2 I still need to visit!)

IMG_0756

They definitely paid attention to the details, with some awesome personalization of their knives.

DSCF3446

And I noticed lots of pink roosters hanging around.

IMG_0757

And some super creepy heads (dead clowns maybe?) up on the wall.

DSCF3449

I had just had a great work meeting and was in a great mood when we sat down for dinner.  The high continued when they served us their table bread, which was a warm herbed flat bread of some kind with a cheese spread.

DSCF3439

It was good enough to have been a menu item.  We all loved it. And boy did it smell like heaven.

DSCF3441

A gentleman came by with a tray of oysters to show off.

DSCF3443

This is the first time I’ve seen that, and it was a winning move.  I wasn’t really considering ordering oysters prior to his visit, trying to jump right to the prepared foods, but with these pretty babies staring back at me, I just had to have some.

DSCF3442

We were then served a bowl that was shaped like another rooster.

DSCF3450

Which contained some little sides for the chicken (I believe).

DSCF3452

And then out came the chicken, which is “Presented in 2 Services.”  First service was the white meat, which was in a mustard sauce.

DSCF3454

They served it with tortilla like bread (which was unlimited and we got more of when we finished the first round) and sauces so you can kind of add sauces and ingredients to make it your own, similar to how peking duck is served.

The meat on this was so juicy and tender, with perfectly crisp skin. I can’t say it was as good as The NoMad chicken, but we all really enjoyed it. Especially the sauce (which surprised me as a non-mustard lover).

DSCF3455

We also ordered the veal, which I couldn’t have due to peppers, but everyone else really enjoyed it.

DSCF3460

My choice was the pork chop with apples.  Another mustard sauce that I actually really loved (am I becoming a convert?) and the pork was incredibly flavorful.

DSCF3464

I loved the apples with it.

DSCF3463

For the second service of the chicken, they served the dark meat… feet and all.

DSCF3467

The boys had some fun with being chicken models.

DSCF3465

Everyone also loved the legs. Sadly, I couldn’t have those either due to the peppers allergy.

Foot models?

DSCF3476

We got a side of the Bacon d’Hotel, which was meaty and thick and juicy and everything we wanted it to be.

DSCF3469

And a side of Pomme Frites which were unique and really fantastic.

DSCF3471

And a side of champignons (mushrooms) were a really great compliment to the rest of the meal.

DSCF3474

For dessert… we just couldn’t decide between the four options… so we went with all of them!

This is what took the meal from very good to great.  We all went around trying to decide which dessert was our favorite.

First was a coconut creme brulee which I thought tasted like vacation but some people thought tasted like sunscreen (though they claimed that wasn’t a bad thing).  I really enjoyed it.

DSCF3477

Next up was a pineapple… something.  I wish I remember what this was called because this was hands down my favorite.  The pineapple was caramelized and it was sensational.  I was deliriously happy when I was eating this. I was shocked at how good it tasted. Really took me (and the entire table) by surprise.

DSCF3479

Then a citrus tarte with meringue on top.  I thought this was really fantastic and loved the slightly browned meringue (I’m a meringue sucker!)

DSCF3480

And lastly, beignets with caramel sauce.  These were perfectly cooked, extra warm, and amazingly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. And that caramel sauce was over the top.  We all dipped a spoon in for one last bite before we finished.

DSCF3485

I’ve heard rumor that service has been an issue for some people, however, our service was fine (though not remarkable by any means). The man who appeared to be a sommelier seemed confused when we asked him where our waiter was and then he took our order… so I’m not sure if that was our assumption gone wrong or if he was filling in. But after that speed bump, we were just fine.

IMG_0753

Overall, I really enjoyed our meal.

I can’t say it was one of the best meals of the year, nor can I say “Go! Run! Now!” but it was definitely enjoyable.  I’m glad we tried it earlier but I do not have the urge to go back. I’d rather try other places.

Though I could do a run through for that pineapple dessert!

Cake Tasting at Pomme Palais

4 Jan

A few weeks ago, I was invited to attend a Holiday Cake tasting at Pomme Palais, a new French gourmet cafe from Chef Michel Richard.  Pomme Palais is in The Palace Hotel at 30 East 51st Street (between Madison and Park Avenues).

DSCF2833

The patisserie itself is brightly lit and spotlights the big, modern cases of various yummy treats.

DSCF2835

DSCF2848

The have some packaged goodies ready to go along with the individual items in the case.  (We actually went back and grabbed some candy bars when we were in the area a few days later)

DSCF2847

I was only able to attend for a bit, but we were treated to some amazing pastries in the time I was there.

The patisserie was described as “whimsical” in the overview and that is a great way to explain it.

The Macaron Cake was an “almond vanilla sponge cake layered with chocolate mousse, coated with dark chocolate, and decorated with macarons for playful color and texture”

DSCF2829

It was a beautiful and playful cake and was quite delicious.

DSCF2827

Though it didn’t sing the way some of the others did.

DSCF2836

The Opera Cake was “layered cake of coffee, chocolate, and almond flavors.”DSCF2828

I was a big fan of this one. I am not a huge cake fan, so I liked that this was layers of different textures without much traditional cake cake.

DSCF2855

We also tried the Charlotte Cake “with fruit, apricot, raspberry, passion yogurt mousse and lady fingers.  This cake can have a mousse filling with any fruit the customer prefers.”  This was good but not on the top of my list.

DSCF2831

The Orange Creme Brulee Cheesecake was something special.  It was described as “a creative twist on the classic cheesecake and flan.”  True to description, this was a perfect balance of cheesecake’s creamy denseness (but not too dense) with a flan like top.  And the orange added a nice flavor essence.

DSCF2839

The Lemon Eggceptional Cake was a beauty.  It was described as “layers of sponge cake, lemon curd, French meringue, topped with white chocolate lemon eggceptionals.”

DSCF2843

This was very nice and a light and fluffy cake, though lemon isn’t my favorite.

DSCF2853

My second favorite cake of the day was the Tart au Pomme which was “puff pastry with thin slices of apple, pastry cream, topped with sugar.”

DSCF2826

The apples on this just popped with flavor. A perfect texture and the perfect balance of tartness and sweet.

DSCF2834

But my number one favorite of the tasting was the Chocolate Fleur d’Automne: “Chocolate flower on top of cake with almond meringue and chocolate mousse.”

DSCF2822

What can I say? I’m a chocolate girl!  This was an exceptional balance of textures and richness with sweetness and a hint of crisp from the hard thin chocolate on top.  I absolutely loved this cake and even though my tummy was quite full by this time, I ate every last bite of this one.

DSCF2851

Though, alas, I couldn’t finish the rest.  I felt awful wasting so much great dessert.

DSCF2849

I had to leave just before the cut into the most adorable of the treats: Michel’s Snowman: “White meringue Snowman wrapped up with a sugar scarf and marzipan-chocolate hat… he carries a rosemary stalk ‘tree’ and includes raspberry sauce.”

You prepare this by rimming the plate with whipped cream and filling the hollow base of the snowman with ice cream.  Sounds like my kind of dessert! I absolutely love hard meringue. I was bummed I didn’t get a chance to try this one, and when we went back a few days later to get some candy, they were all sold out. I’ll just have to go back!

But seriously… how adorable is this guy?

DSCF2825

Near the end of the tasting, a very jovial Chef Michel Richard came out to say hello.  He is quintessentially French, and while almost a little too friendly with the ladies, he was very happy to ham it up for the camera.  He was incredibly happy and seemed genuinely excited to be sharing his creations with us.

DSCF2850

We were sent home with a lovely box of candy.

DSCF2857

And each bite was better than the last.  I am very picky about my candies, and these were exceptional.

DSCF2856

I have been to many patisseries in NYC (and around the world), baking is my first love, and I am a dessert person to the extreme.  I wasn’t expecting to like this place as much as I did, and the desserts were really fantastic and original.  The only other place I’ve had desserts as noteworthy is at Dominique Ansel. (Though Chef Ansel will always have my heart)

I would never have known to stop by Pomme Palais had I not been invited to try these cakes, so this was one perk in which I was more than happy to participate.  I was very thankful for the opportunity and can’t wait to go back (and try that snowman)!

Cakes range from $20 (for the snowman) to $42 (for most of the full cakes).  Quite expensive, but worth it to impress at a party. And the individual pastries are probably reasonably priced for a nice snack near Rockefeller Center or before a Radio City performance. (They also have some non-dessert foods that looked quite good). And the candy bars we got a few days later… awesome.

Highly recommend a stop!

Note: While I was privileged enough to do this tasting for free, all opinions expressed are my own.

Aureole

19 Jul

I ate at Aureole once for a work function, but since I was presenting and keeping clients happy, the food was not on my mind. I had been meaning to go back every since and finally made it there with a fellow foodie friend. It is very centrally located in a place where you just don’t expect great restaurants: 42nd Street right off of Times Square.

I’m pretty sure we went with the $89 prix fixe. They have a pre-Broadway prix fixe that seems like a steal for 3 courses at $55 (5-6pm).

We started with an amuse bouche that I cannot recall the exact details on.

DSCF8023

My choice to start was the chestnut papparedelle with slow roasted veal breast, wild mushrooms, and pecorino.  This tasted like the earth and I absolutely loved it.  I have a special place in my heart for chestnut, and I kind of wished there were pieces (only because I’m selfish), but it was a very good dish.

DSCF8024

We also tried the wagyu beef carpaccio with shiitake, scallions, taro root, ponzo, and lavash.  This was perfectly complimentary in flavors, with the nice richness of the meat cut but the sweetness of the ponzo and with added depth from the shiitake.  Very nice.

DSCF8026

We also tried the branzino (my favorite fish) with fennel, dandelion, red onion, cashew, and citrus.  It was all sorts of perfection.  Cooked incredibly well and balances of flavors that were just fabulous.

DSCF8030

And we tried the prime ribyeye steak with roasted root vegetables, brussels sprouts, horseradish, and natural beef jus. It was cooked just right and the horseradish was faint enough that I hardly noticed it.

DSCF8033

A palate cleanser soon arrived and it was a nice little burst of fruit to get us ready for dessert.

DSCF8035

The desserts came out and they were pieces of artwork. Sadly, I didn’t write them down, so I can only guess.

This was something chocolate (I’m going to guess a lava cake) with delicious strands of pulled sugar on top. I remember this being rich but balanced.

DSCF8039

I know I ordered something with meringue (another one of my favorite things).  I remember really enjoying the flavors of this, but missing the firm crisp of the type of meringue I enjoy so much.

DSCF8040

And then out came petit fours.  Each was delicious in their own right, but I remember thinking extra fondly of the macaron and the watermelon thing.

DSCF8045

I was really impressed by our meal at Aureole, not only because it was just that good, but also because it’s somewhat unassuming. It’s not a place I’ve heard talked about much, yet it’s right in the heart of the theatre district (a place I live near, work near, and play near often).  If you are looking for a pre-theatre meal, I think that $55 prix fixe is a great deal!
